The driver, who was involved in the fatal accident on the Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice public road on Monday was on Friday remanded by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when he appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on three charges.
The man, Mahendra Ramanan, called Bangat, 36, of Number Two Village, West Coast Berbice, allegedly drove motor car PMM 8812 in a dangerous manner thus causing the death of nine-year-old Jaswattie Ramnauth,
Another charge read that on the said day, place and time he failed to render assistance to Jaswattie Ramnauth or to take her to a recognized medical practitioner.
The final charge states that after being involved in an accident he failed to report the said accident to the nearest police station or to a police constable within 24 hours.
Prosecutor Corporal Sherlock King prosecuting asked that bail be refused. Stating that the accused is a flight risk and might not return for his trial, one of the children is still in hospital.
The accused failed to render assistance and fled the accident scene.
Attorney at law Tajenarine Ramroop representing Ramanan argued for bail for his client. He stated that Ramanan is married and the father of three small children. He is not a flight risk.
His client at no time escaped but was assisting the children to the hospital when he stopped home and was informed that angry residents were coming to attack him and his family, he and his family had to flee their home.
He further stated that his client did not escape from the scene but was in sever pain and sought medical attention at the practice of a private doctor in New Amsterdam; he then proceeded to Skeldon and slept at his mother’s residence.
He further stated that he was not speeding, but blamed the accident on the massive amount of mud that was left on the road from the wheels of tractors and trucks that operates in the back dam. He stated that his client was also scared and his family has not returned home since.
Ramanan had turned himself in at the Blairmont police station on Tuesday more than one day after killing the nine-year-old schoolgirl Jaswattie Ramnauth.
Ramnauth was killed on Monday when the Honda Sports car careened into the girl and her eight year old brother Vijai Ramnauth.
Jaswattie, who suffered severe injuries, died on the spot. Her brother, Vijai, who suffered severe head injuries and a broken limb, was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a critical condition.
The children who lived at Lot 15 Ketting Street, D’ Edward, West Coast Berbice, were pupils of the Cotton Tree Primary School and were in the process of writing end of term examinations.
They were on their way home at about 08:25 hrs after they were told by teachers that they were not required at school in the morning.
Ramanan was involved in an accident two years ago, when he struck 12-year-old Sateshwar Ragunandan, who also lives in the area. Ragunandan was in a coma for some nine months according to his guardian.
The boy has been left in a paralyzed state after the accident. Sources said that the matter was settled out of court.
This matter has been transferred to the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court for Monday.
