Come Saturday, businessmen on the Essequibo Coast who are frequent users of the M.V.Torani would be disappointed, since the vessel would be out of regular service for two days.
The Essequibo businessmen are contending that they should not have to suffer at the hands of a prominent businessman, who has hired the vessel to conduct a wedding.
However, the Transport and Harbours Department said that on both Saturday and Sunday, while the M.V. Torani would not be in operation, passengers from Essequibo would not be affected.
An official attached to TH&D, is of the view that the regular boats that ply the Supenaam\Parika route, usually undertake single trips daily.
The official said that the Baramani, the M.V. Torani and the Makouria are all equipped with beds, stoves and other facilities.
Businessmen argue that the Baramani, which is a smaller vessel, is also a pontoon, which along with the M.V.Torani and Makouria are the three scheduled boats that ply the Supenaam\Parika route on a daily basis.
The three barely move the trucks that must cross the Essequibo River, the businessmen said. They must line up at the stelling to await crossing.
The trucks are often forced to remain in a line since the ferries operate on a first come, first load basis.
“We are not allowed to park anymore in the compound at Supenaam and this is affecting truck owners who must now protect themselves against the pilferers.”
Prominent businessman, Sam Bacchus, who frequently uses the M.V. Torani and had planned to do so this weekend to move three laden trucks with goods destined for Georgetown, on Saturday, said he would be gravely affected by the setback.
Bacchus said that he was only made aware of the absence of the boat in the system, after he posted a call to Parika on Wednesday.
