Twenty-three-year-old Lakeraj Fredericks and a 16-year-old yesterday appeared before Magistrate Anne McLennan jointly charged with the murder of Clifton Bonus, who was killed on June 4, in Linden.
In a previous court appearance the teen alone was charged with Bonus’s murder. However, yesterday Prosecutor Deneshwar Nauth informed Magistrate Anne McLennan that he had received correspondence from the DPP’s office advising that the matter against Tyson be discontinued and discharged.
The Magistrate subsequently discharged the charge against the teen, and then read the charge of murder to both the teen and Fredericks.
The charge read that the two allegedly murdered Clifton Bonus, also known as Mutty, at Nottinghamshire backlands on Friday June 4.
The charge was indictable and they were not required to plead. The teen appeared dazed in the docks and was sweating profusely. He was subsequently given a bottle of water.
He was dressed in white long-sleeved shirt and black pants. Co-accused Lakeraj Fredericks was also similarly dressed, but unlike Tyson he stood erect with his two hands at his side and a blank look on his face.
The courtroom was cleared before the two were brought in; then later, Magistrate McLennan requested that Tyson’s parents be brought into the court room.
They were asked to verify the juvenile’s age. The teen’s foster father, Alysious Oudkerk, had to however answer the questions pertaining to the teen’s age, as the boy’s mother Jashodra Tyson is reportedly hard of hearing.
Lakeraj Fredericks gave his address as 12 Independence Street, La Grange, West Dank Demerara. He told the court that he was a farmer. His attorney, Glen Hanoman, told the court that Fredericks and the teen were cousins, and that the teen was employed by Fredericks.
Prosecutor Deneshwar Nauth said that he had 13 witnesses, but Hanoman expressed surprise saying that he knew of only one witness, and that was based on a caution statement.
The matter was adjourned to July 13 for a report. Magistrate McLennan said that on that date she would try to hear from a few of the witnesses. Fredericks was further remanded, while Tyson will remain in custody at a juvenile facility.
The teen was however taken by police to seek medical attention, soon after his court appearance, as he had complained of feeling unwell. He was accompanied by his mother and another relative.
The teen was reportedly working with Fredericks on a farm in the backlands of the Nottinghamshire area, when Bonus was murdered. He had allegedly returned home after the murder.
The teen was later questioned by police, and after giving a statement he reportedly assisted with the recovery of Bonus’s body.
He had told police that he was working on a farm when he heard gunshots. He had run to investigate, when he saw two men standing over the dead man. One of them, Lakeraj Fredericks reportedly had a gun in his hand.
He then said “ I beating out” but Fredericks reportedly held the gun to his head and ordered him to take the shovel and cutlass and bury the dead man.
Yesterday was the second consecutive day that the two were taken to the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court. However the case was not called on Tuesday.
Relatives of Clifton Bonus, who had converged at the court early on Tuesday, were very disappointed and angry, and a few wept openly outside the courtroom.
His mother Karen Lashley cried throughout after Fredericks was brought out of the courtroom and asked repeatedly,’ Why he had to kill me son, why, is wha he coulda do so? Is best he de send he back home to me- he don’t know how he break me heart- that was me only child!’
Fredericks had remained quiet throughout, his head bent, while he wiped his eyes repeatedly. Not once did he look in the family’s direction.
Fredericks had eluded police after Bonus’s murder but was subsequently caught after he reportedly committed another murder at First Street, Garden of Eden, even as Police were hunting for him. The victim was identified as twenty two year old Vernon Renaldo.
Renaldo was reportedly asleep when he was fatally stabbed. Fredericks allegedly fled the scene, but was apprehended by a community policing group member, while walking on the Linden Soesdyke Highway. He was subsequently remanded to prison last Tuesday.
