Construction works of the Ogle airstrip to accommodate large planes are scheduled to conclude by August. The $381M project which is being executed by BK International commenced in August 2009.
According to Sunil Ganesh, Bridges Engineer of the Ministry of Public Works and Communications, the project is 90 percent complete.
The scope of the works entails extending the existing runway by 2,000 feet in the southern direction and 200 feet in the northern direction; and the widening of the runway by 40 feet collectively in the western and eastern directions.
The 2,000-foot extension and the widening of the airstrip have been completed and the contractor is currently executing construction works to complete the remaining 200 feet which is 20 percent completed.
The contract has a duration of 22 months and a defects liability period of one year.
According to Ganesh, the finished dimensions of the airstrip would be 4,200-ft in length by 100-ft in width.
At the moment only small planes are utilising the facility. The Ogle Airport was officially opened in March 2007 and was declared an international port of entry.
The airport is situated on the East Coast Demerara, minutes away from the CARICOM Secretariat, Guyana International Conference Centre, and the University of Guyana.
