An early morning accident involving a car and a minibus has left a 50-year-old mother of two battling for her life. The accident occurred at the intersection of Princes and High Streets around 06:45 hrs yesterday.
Naimala Sugrim, of 292 Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, suffered severe head and back injuries after a minibus slammed into the motorcar in which she was travelling.
Kaieteur News was told that another woman was driving the car with Sugrim seated at the back.
Further this newspaper was told that the driver of the car attempted to cross the major road and drove into the path of the bus.
The impact sent the car spinning and it ended up in a nearby trench. According to eyewitnesses the two women were momentarily trapped in the vehicle.
With the help of several men from the Broad Street area the two women were pulled from the vehicle and taken to the hospital.
The driver of the vehicle, whose name up to the press time was not given, was treated at a private institution.
Surgrim’s brother in law, Indrajed Ramkissoon, yesterday told Kaieteur News that he received the telephone call around 07:00hrs yesterday.
Ramkissoon said that he and his wife immediately got dressed and went to the hospital. The man opined that his sister in law and her friend were probably returning from buying ice when the accident happened.
“She does sell fish at de market and she does usually use that route to go buy ice,” Ramkissoon said.
The man described his sister-in-law’s injures as “life threatening” and she was slipping in and out of consciousness.
He also told Kaieteur News that Surgrim had to undergo a CT scan to determine the extent of her head injuries.
Sources close to the investigation said that the driver of the minibus might not be in the wrong.
He sustained minor injuries. The source said that the driver of the minibus was the only person in the bus. Investigations into the accident are continuing.
