Joel McRae steps in the ring against ‘Dangerous’ Denny Dalton when the 15th edition of the Proam boxing cards gets underway on Friday June 24 and from all appearances the former boxer means business.
McRae operates out of the Cosmic Boxing gym, Trinidad and Tobago, and arrived for his ring date one day prior to the pre-flight press conference at the National Communications Network (NCN) Studios Tuesday afternoon.
Both boxers were asked to give an indication of their intentions on fight night and Dalton, a born again Christian, said that he is placing the fight results in the hands of his Saviour. He said that he has trained thoroughly and that coupled with his unswerving belief in God will serve as a fillip to his morale and an eventual win.
In response, McRae simply rose from his seat and planted a kiss to the ground while urging spectators not to take their eyes off the fight. “Don’t blink,” he warned moments after kissing the ground, “Because that may just be the moment when the bout will end,” he concluded.
In response, Dalton merely allowed a trace of a smile to cross his lips while reiterating his intentions. He said that he had been Winston Pompey’s main sparring partner for the latter fighter’s recent bout in Jamaica against homeboy, Sakima Mullings. Dalton also engaged in sparring sessions with Ray Sandiford and Mark Austin, two other boxers appearing on the card. Usually reserved, Dalton threw off the shackles to inform McRae that this bout meant a lot to him and he will do whatever it takes to come out victorious.
Dalton will be on the redemption trail after dropping back to back decisions against Hector ‘Machito’ Camacho and Rawle Frank.
For his part, McRae said that he has been working diligently at the Cosmic Boxing Gym and has sparred several rounds against quality boxers the likes of Floyd Trumpet and Kurt Sinnette, two notable Trinidadian pugilists. He stopped short of predicting a knockout but his tone seemed to suggest that fans should not rule out such an eventuality.
Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers did not travel from Berbice but reports are that he is attending to training sessions in preparation for his bantamweight bout with Ray Sandiford. The latter fighter has promised to stamp his authority reminiscent of his debut fight against the more experienced Cecil Smith last month.
Mark Austin, who tackles Barbados based Guyanese Revlon Lake, for the vacant local lightweight crown is also oozing confidence and said that he has made some adjustments to his approach after his loss to Barbadian Miguel Antoine. This is his second outing against Lake but this time the distance has been extended to twelve rounds while the stakes are higher. Lake was due to arrive in Guyana sometime yesterday and is expected to open camp with a light session.
In the final professional bout of the night, unbeaten Simeon attempts to preserve his record against Eversley Brown in a catchweight affair.
Meanwhile, President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Peter Abdool is pleased with the progress of the respective boxers as well as the impact of the ProAm initiative. He is also optimistic that local boxers would be able to make the transition to the international scene based on their involvement in the cards. Already, Lennox Allen and Elton Dharry have been able to procure Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) titles, a direct spring off from the card.
Admission price remains at $1,000 while those with special passes may gain entry on producing them. Bell time is 20:00hrs sharp.
