Antigua (Antigua Observer)- A family has been plunged into mourning after one of its members, Kerwin Anthony Gomes, met an untimely death after falling from a mango tree in Villa Tuesday afternoon.
The 38-year-old man of Jennings New Extension had just dropped off his fiancée and life partner for almost 20 years, Sandra Joseph, to work when she received the news of the accident.
“We still don’t know what happened. We haven’t got any idea of what caused him to fall or even why he died,” Joseph told this newspaper.
Joseph explained that shortly after she received a call informing her that her fiancé was hospitalised, she was again called and told she should go to the Emergency Room as soon as she could.
“I left from Dickenson Bay and when I got to about Villa Area I got the second call saying I needed to hurry because it did not look too good. I thought I had enough time to get to him but when I got to him it was too late; he was already dead,” she said solemnly.
Bystanders contacted the Emergency Medical Services after the self-employed mechanic, who is believed to have been electrocuted, climbed into the tree to pick fruits. A sharp scream was heard before he fell from the tree.
An ambulance responded to the scene at John Joseph’s auto body shop at 1:30 pm where emergency personnel met Gomes unresponsive and bleeding from the nose. A second ambulance was summoned to assist with the resuscitation efforts while he was transported to Mount St John’s Medical Centre.
The white Toyota Corolla with the words “Thank God” on the windshield, which the Guyanese drove to Villa, remained at the scene hours after he was pronounced dead.
Gomes migrated to Antigua at the age of 13 with his mother and has lived here for over 20 years.
He is survived by his 15-year-old son Keiron, brother Clyde, his half-sister Leslyn and a host of other family members.
An initial investigation launched by Antigua Public Utilities Authority reportedly suggests that there were no leaks of electricity in the mango tree.
An autopsy is expected to be carried out to determine the cause of death.
