Head Coach of the Alpha United Football Club Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover did not spare any thoughts to describe the performance of his charges in their first game of the 4th Inter Guiana Club Championships on Tuesday night at the Remire Montjoly Stadium, French Guiana.
Dover summed up his charges display as “Dismal and Poor”, noting that they were outplayed by a fitter and disciplined team.
The long standing coach who has guided Alpha to multiple local championships and the CONCACAF Club Champions Cup, the first Guyanese club side to achieve such a feat, believes that this will serve as an eye opener for the club stressing the fact that going forward, proper preparation is needed to be effective.
“I saw an unfit unit {Alpha} trying to compete against an organised and fit Matoury side. We were not compact as a team and too reactive in the game. The opponents just kept pressing and moving faster than us in every aspect and that in itself was the difference between the two sides.”
Looking ahead to today’s second game which is crucial for both sides – Alpha and Inter Moengotapoe – Dover believes that execution will be key in terms of the team play more compact and smart football.
“The guys did not stick to the game plan on Tuesday night, they played a disjointed game rather than remaining close to each other to be more effective and solid.”
He acknowledged that it would be quite an uphill task to rebound and win the tournament for the first time having started with a defeat but they will remain positive because every game brings a different performance and result.
“With three goals against you and none for is quite difficult but we would have to go for a win to give ourselves a realistic chance of challenging for the championship. We will remain positive however and look for similar results.”
The Alpha players who left for the USA including Captain Howard Lowe, Nigel Codrington, Abassi McPherson, Dwight Peters and Devon Millington among others have placed the team under pressure but Dover is of the view that whilst that is so, it presented the opportunity for other players to step up to the plate and command their position.
“Leaving at this crucial moment would have weakened the team a bit, but at the same time I think this created valuable exposure for a few of the others who don’t normally play when those guys are around and the onus is on them to capitalise on this opportunity and give a performance that would put pressure on the Technical staff, but the fact that some of these guys have not shown the mental toughness in game one we hope that they can bounce back in our second and third games.”
A few changes would be made to the team for tonight’s match which can see Andrew Murray and Leon Grumble starting. The other players in French Guiana are Richard Reynolds, Shavane Seaforth, Shawn Bishop, Travis Grant, Anthony Abrams (Captain), Warren Gilkes, Quincy Madramootoo, Kelvin McKenzie, Clive Andries, Alex Murray, Keon Sears, Selwyn Isaacs and Alpha Sylvester.
