Just as they had promised, Bermuda employed a physical game to overrun Guyana 11-0 in the final of the NAWIRA 15’s Championship which was played last evening at the National Stadium at Providence.
The visitors got their points from Thom Edwards, who netted two penalties and Thomas Greenslide’s try to deprive Guyana of the coveted double in regional rugby. Guyana holders of the 7’s version of Caribbean rugby for the past five years, tried valiantly in the second period to recover from the early onslaught of the Bermudians, but errant catching and tough defending from the visitors put paid to all the ambitions of the Guyanese team.
Coach Theodore Henry speaking after the loss said that it was tough to deal with the defeat, having suffered a similar result in their previous visit to the final at the last tournament.
“It is a bit disappointing for me, but we took a bunch of Under-19 players and fast forward them into the senior squad so I’m satisfied that the team tried their best to come up with a positive result,” Henry told this newspaper.
He disclosed that they were beaten by a more experienced team that he is certain plays far more 15’s rugby than they do.
Bermuda’s Head Coach Lawrence Bird in his comments revealed that both the coaching staff and the team are extremely happy with the result, adding that they have a healthy respect for Guyana, but it is unfortunate that they lost.
“The respect we have for Guyana is huge, but we’ve been working on this for a very long time,” he said.
He added that he was quite satisfied with the standard of rugby displayed and called on teams in the region to begin to play at the international level more often to attain the standards of the teams in Europe and possibly the Australasia continent.
