The idea of a small airplane falling out of the sky is a terrifying one but what about seeing that airplane flipping tail over nose off the runway.
Fortunately for the pilot of an Air Services Ltd (ASL) Cessna 172 he survived and the plane was undamaged, yesterday.
Annette Arjoon, an official of ASL told Kaieteur News that yesterday while making a routine run to Kaow Island in the Mazaruni River, the single engine, three-seater plane – the smallest plane in the company’s fleet – made its regular approach to the airstrip on the island.
During the landing, however, a strong tailwind came up and pushed the small craft further down the runway than it should have gone. At the end of the runway the plane dropped into a small decline that caused the entire craft to flip over.
In keeping with Civil Aviation regulations investigators from the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority flew to the island yesterday afternoon and checked the plane thoroughly before clearing it for flight.
After the check ASL’s Chief Pilot and the pilot who flew the plane into Kaow Island brought it back out to Georgetown.
According to Ms. Arjoon, at the time of the accident, the pilot was the only person on the aircraft.
The Cessna 172 is a single piston engine, high winged aircraft.
