Guyanese Richard Chin won his third consecutive Barbados Squash Open title last Saturday evening at the Barbados Squash Club, Marine Gardens.
Chin uncharacteristically found himself in deep troubled waters against a far younger Cameron Stafford a Squash Pro from the Cayman Islands, but preformed a sensational comeback to survive two match points in the third and fourth games, after being two down.
It was one of the most exciting cliffhanger matches in recent times before a frenzied packed house.
Chin eventually won the contest 4-11, 5-11, 12-10, 13-11 and 11-7 in a remarkable comeback.
A truly modest champion, Chin fought through pain and swelling in his right ankle due to an injury in the Achilles tendon area suffered during the semifinals, not even informing anyone of his predicament, despite his movement being hampered.
Stafford, who turned pro earlier in the year, crushed Chin in the first two games, hitting nicks and repeatedly wrong footing the defending champion as only world class players do.
However, Chin then proceeded to save match-balls in both 3rd and 4th games, then proceeded to win a hard fought 5th game to show his true mettle and earn a much deserved title.

So good to see Chin can still fight for every point. I like the line about “a far younger Cameron Stafford.”
