Prosecution given two weeks to produce tapes

The preliminary inquiry into the treason charges aginst Major Bruce Munroe, his wife Carol-Ann, and former reserve officer Leonard Wharton, continued yesterday before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
At yesterday’s hearing Defence Counsel Nigel Hughes requested that the prosecution produce the tapes that they hold as evidence against his clients in the matter.
The Magistrate then stated that the prosecution has 14 days to produce the tapes to her. She told the court that when she receives the tapes, if the evidence is sufficient enough for her to rule, a copy of the tape will be given to the defence counsel.
The matter was then set for continuation on July 18.
Defence counsel Gregory Gaskin and George Thomas, and Director of Public Prosecutions, Shalimar Ali-Hack, were all present at yesterday’s proceedings.
Wharton, a reservist in the Guyana Defence Force; Munroe, a serving major in the army and his wife Carol-Ann, were on December 27, last, arrested and charged with conspiracy for treason.
It is alleged that between December 1 and December 16, 2010, the three accused allegedly plotted to level war within Guyana to force the President out of office in order to compel the government to change its measures.
The trio first appeared in court on December 28, last. Treason is a capital offence which is not bailable.
