Muslim cleric, Roy Achmed Van Tholl, is in police custody on suspicion of fraud. According to reports, Businessman Reeaz Khan entered into an agreement with Van Tholl during the middle of last year for the latter to sell goods supplied by Khan.
Khan said that he gave the man goods totalling $5.2 million to allow the man to operate a retail outlet. The goods included electronic and household equipment such as washing machines, refrigerators, freezers and television sets.
He said that Van Tholl established outlets at Chateau Margot and at Better Hope.
According to Khan, the man sold some $3.8 million worth of equipment but he only turned over $1.9 million. Some time last year.
Khan said that after awhile he realized something was wrong so he asked for the return of the unsold articles. Instead he got pieces of equipment worth $1.4 million some time in March.
Van Tholl then disappeared in April and was not seen again until May 23, last. When confronted he promised to pay over the remainder of the money. Khan said that the man paid him $17,000 and disappeared again.
The police arrested Van Tholl last week and detained him for 72 hours without a charge. They released him over the past weekend and ordered him to return on Monday. Van Tholl did not.
The police arrested him yesterday.
Last night Khan said that certain people in the Muslim community were preparing to help Van Tholl make restitution. However, up to news time there was no word of any restitution.
