Months of intense planning will finally come to fruition when officials of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Ltd (GT&T) launch the inaugural GT&T Fast Ball Football competition at the Mackenzie Sports Complex Ground on Friday July 22 next. Already, one hundred and twenty teams have registered for participation in what is expected to be one solid month of pulsating football.
The organizers convened a press conference yesterday in the GT&T Sports Club to brief media operatives on developments of the competition. Those present at the forum were Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GT&T, Yog Mahadeo, K&S executive, Kashif Muhammad, Public Relations Officer, Nadia DeAbreu, Royston Rajpaul, Kirwyn Bollers and Mahadeo Dhivraj. Each member of the above team is vested with special responsibilities that promise to consummate a product geared to produce unbridled fun and entertainment.
Over eight million dollars would be expended by the telephone magnates with the winning team carting off two million dollars. Otherwise, the organizers informed that six million dollars will be utilized in giveaways as they attempt to create an environment where spectators will leave with fond memories. Further, patrons may do well to deck out in blue as there will be special prizes for those in this category. “The aim of this exercise is to encourage the involvement of a wide cross section of people while bolstering the unity concept,” explained Mr. Mahadeo.
Initially, the organizers had made provision for a large number of teams but hardly envisaged the huge response that witnessed more that 120 teams registering. Even after registration had closed last Friday, the requests for involvement continued and the organizers are currently forced to adjust their plans. “We are currently examining the prospects of drafting in teams that have sent in late registration,” informed Mr. Mahadeo. He is also pleased with the feedback which suggests that the tournament has been well received.
One of the Kashif and Shanghai directors, Kashif Muhammad supported Mr. Mahadeo’s prognosis that the organizing aspect has been great. He said that some 20 female teams have registered and the organizers are currently working on the fixtures for release sometime next week. Already, residents along the West Bank corridor would have had a taste of the excitement following several matches played in that area last week.
The tournament would not be devoid of top entertainment and the person responsible for this, Kirwyn Bollers, has promised much. Bluey Max will also be in attendance and so will the Dancing Girls. “We have a wonderful package in store for patrons,” assured Mr. Bollers.
There will be on field and off field excitement; Bluey Max is set to entertain while teams will come from every nook and cranny of the country. The finals are set for the National Stadium and admission is fixed at $500. The organizers have summed it up; It’s a ‘don’t you dare miss it’ event. The final match will be broadcast live on NCN television. Banks DIH Ltd, NCN and Impressions have been lauded for their corporate input. The crowd attendance coupled with the highly anticipated thrillers will serve as the icing on the `cake.
