– second seed Gentle survives scare from Fernandes
Carlos Adams produced an efficient performance to advance in the Men’s 35 Singles category with an easy 6-2, 6-2 straight sets win over arch rival Rudy Grant as matches continued in this year’s GBTI Open Tennis Championships at the entity’s Hardcourts in Bel Air.
Adams chipped and charged to the net which proved to be decisive against Grant’s slow paced drop and lob style.
The defending Doubles champions Jason Andrews (left) and Jeremy Miller pose for a photo op shortly after their win against Nicholas / Jason Glasgow.
Grant relentlessly tested Adams ability to hit overhead winners with his trademark accurate lobs, but the latter maintained his aggression to pull off the one sided win.
In the Ladies quarter final matchup, Thi Fernandes provided second seed Shawna Gentle with a wakeup call as she stormed to a 6-2 first set win which included winning four straight games.
Fernandes, however, could not sustain the momentum as Gentle found a groove and capitalised on mistakes which proved to be decisive and took the final two sets 6-1, 6-0 to advance to play Aretta Dey in the semi-finals.
In Mixed Doubles play, there was an action packed encounter between top Berbician pair Godfrey Lowden/Carol Humphrey and Ezra Sue-Ho/Shawna Gentle which went right down to the wire to decide a winner.
The pairs provided entertaining tennis for the fair sized crowd who had earlier watched top Men’s player Anthony Downes destroy a game Oswin Coggins in straight sets.
Lowden/Humphrey won the first set 6-4, before Sue-Ho/Gentle levelled the match by taking the second set in a tie-breaker and force the decisive set which Lowden/Humphrey took 6-4 to advance to the finals.
Defending Men’s Doubles champions Jason Andrews / Jeremy Miller also had a tough time in overcoming the Glasgow brothers Nicholas and Jason who matched their opponents point for point, but could not do enough to pull off the win.
The match featured explosive points as the players followed up their big serves with deft volleying, before Miller/Andrews won both sets 6-4.
More exciting action is expected as the tournament comes down to the business end with the top seeds facing each other.
