– Sue-Ho, Lewis, Panday, Gobin amongst winners
For the second time in six months, Aruna Ramrattan achieved what many of her junior peers have failed to do, pull off a win against veteran champion Carol Humphrey in the Ladies Singles category after an epic four-hour encounter.
Humphrey has been a major stumbling block for all the top players over the years as her gritty play and perseverance always allowed her to dominate in the Ladies division.
On Saturday evening in front of a packed crowd, it took a marathon battle for the sixteen year old Ramrattan to pull off the win against a determined Humphrey, who fought back valiantly after dropping the first set 6-4 to force a decider with an easy 6-2 second set win.
Both players played well with long rallies being a feature of the match and it was a battle of nerves as both had trouble holding serves to push home the advantage.
In the final set, Ramrattan held on to win the decider 6-4 after Humphrey started going for broke with her shots as she tried to seize the initiative.
Ramrattan had earlier gotten past Nicola Ramdyhan 6-3, 6-3 in a match that was completed after rain affected last Friday’s matches.
She has a possible rematch of the Macorp Open finals, if number two seed Shawna Gentle can make her way out of the matches against Thi Fernandes and Aretta Dey.
Saturday was a day of marathon matches as another junior toppled a more favoured veteran player. Gavin Lewis had to pull out all the stops to defeat Over 35 Singles champion Andre Lopes in a three hour battle on Court Two.
Lopes stylish play was on display as he took the first set 6-4, before Lewis went ahead 4-2 in the second stanza.
However, Lopes tied it up at 5-5, before losing the set 7-5 and then 6-3 in the final set that left both players completely exhausted.
Earlier in the day, 14-year old Khalif Gobin prevailed over Benedict Sukra after a 2 ½ hours battle in sweltering midday heat.
Both juniors played extremely well in the unfriendly conditions and put on a show as they reeled off winners and tested each other skills to the limit.
In the end, after being tied one set apiece, Gobin won the super tie-breaker.
Gobin will face second seed Daniel Lopes, whilst top seed Gavin Lewis will face Seanden David Longe in the other semi-finals.
In other matches, number two seed Ezra Sue-Ho needed to be at his best to get past veteran Owen Lewis 6-1, 6-3, who despite match rustiness put on a good show.
In Men’s 35 Singles, Harry Panday outplayed former champion Don Singh 6-0, 6-3 to advance for a showdown with either Carlos Adams or number two seed Rudy Grant for a spot in the final.
In the Novice categories there were wins for Andrew Sawh, Gavin Ramsoondar, Anthony Sookram,Vini Aaron and Lambert Robertson
