– activity set for Sunday, London donates 500 Jerseys
President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), K.A Juman Yasin indicated yesterday that the Presidential Candidates from Guyana’s major political parties were invited to take part in the symbolic Olympic Day Run/Jog/Walk that will be held on Sunday.
Yasin was speaking yesterday at a Press Conference at Olympic House where details to stage the activity that symbolises the spirit of the Olympics across the world were disclosed. Yasin said to-date only one of the invited Presidential Candidates has responded.
Apart from the Presidential Candidates, each association, whose discipline is one of the Olympic sports, are usually invited to take part in the event, which is also a competition. The activity was organised in observance of the global ‘International Olympic Day’.
The annual Olympic Day Run/Jog/Walk will start at 6am Sunday morning starting at the YMCA in Thomas Lands, Camp Road. Yasin made it clear that the Jog/Walk component of the activities is not a race and is open to all individuals over 10 and registration is free.
However, there will be a 10km Team Run, which is a competition among teams from the athletic clubs across Guyana. Each team comprises two females and four males while each competitor is expected to finish the race before their points are formally tabulated.
Participation in the 10km Team Run was extended to associations and schools with each allowed a maximum of two teams. S far, defending champions, Guyana Defence Force, have already sent in their representative ‘A’ and ‘B’ Team to stage a title defence.
Kaieteur Sport understands that Cleveland Forde is part of the Defence Force team, while Dennis Horatio will lead last year’s third place finisher, the Guyana Police Force. Registration will close on Wednesday at 4pm at Olympic House. All were asked to take note.
The winner of the Team Run will pocket $60,000 while the second and third place teams will get $40,000 and $30,000 respectively.
London, the host of the 2012 Olympic Games, contributed the 500 jerseys that will be given to the first 500 registrants of the event.
