A brazen daylight robbery at the Linden Utility Services Cooperative Society Limited (LUSCSL) on Burnham Drive, Wismar, Linden, has left employees of the institution in shock, and security Supervisor Veronica Fontanelle nursing head injuries.
Also injured during the robbery was a security officer attached to the Linmine Secretariat, which is tasked with escorting personnel from LUSCSL to the bank.
The officer was at the time about to take Fontanelle to the bank, to deposit cash from both LUSCSL’s electrical billings and the Utility store on the bottom flat. The bandits who reportedly came out of nearby Water Lily Road (Poker Street) escaped with approximately $600,000 in cash. The incident occurred shortly after 17:00hrs according to reports.
Fontanelle was reportedly severely gun butted and knocked down on the road, where she lay bleeding profusely. The woman was attacked by one of the bandits who had a gun, and who demanded her bags.
She refused and held unto the two bags- one with the cash belonging to LUSCSL, and the other her personal bag. An employee of LUSCSL said that she was right in front of the building when the incident occurred, and the bandit just pushed her out of the way, and rushed over to Fontanelle, who was about to enter the Secretariat vehicle.
She said that she heard him say, “Gimme da bag. Gimme da bag!’
The woman said that she was in such shock, that she blurted out, “Is true this thing actually happening?”
Eyewitnesses said that Fontanelle struggled fiercely with her attacker. Her escort, who was also attacked by the bandit, also put up a struggle, and was also gun butted.
“That thing happened so fast; is everybody was in shock’ an eyewitness related.
“Miss Vera hair de red, red was sheer blood. All on the road had blood,” the woman added.
Fontanelle’s daughter was reportedly called and told that her mother had been shot.
Other reports indicated that the Linmine security officer was gun butted about six or seven times, with each time the gun connected to the man’s head being clearly audible. “The man was dizzy, staggering, but he de still fighting,’ another eyewitness reported. The man’s gun was also taken away
Fragments of the gun, which were used to assault the duo, were reportedly picked up by police.
The police arrived at the scene approximately twenty minutes after the incident, according to reports, and by that time the bandits had already made good their escape.
Manager Esme Yangapatty said that she had tried calling the police a few times, but the phone was busy.
Yangapatty said that for the almost 18 years that she has worked at the institution nothing of the sort has ever taken place.
“This incident has left us very traumatised, but we will be working hard to put in place better security systems. We will definitely be stepping up security.”
The manager also indicated that formerly, the Linmine Secretariat had provided two security officers as escorts.
But recently sometimes only one officer would do the escort.
