The bronze medal won by Michael Anthony Parris at the 1980 Moscow Olympics stands out like a beacon light and serves as an impetus for local amateur pugilists to aspire to greater heights. However, despite their most valiant efforts, these boxers are constrained by a paucity of corporate support which in the end would render their efforts inconsequential.
It is for that reason that the executives of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) continue to agitate for corporate intervention to offset the many programmes that they have planned towards the boxers’ development.
At a recently convened Ordinary General Meeting, these executives examined the situation and realized that most of the gyms lacked proper punching bags among other critical gears. A massive campaign to solicit help from the corporate community recently bore fruit when the administrators of A H & L Kissoon Ltd affirmed their support and yesterday morning, in the presence of several GABA officials and media representatives, at their Houston EBD offices. The furniture magnates, led by Managing Director, Mr. Hemraj Kissoon, joined other executives of his firm and donated nine punching bags to executives of GABA.
President of the latter organization, Steve Ninvalle accepted the gift on behalf of his organization and expressed deep gratitude to Mr. Kissoon. “This is indeed a selfless gesture and I wish to urge the public to support AH&L Kissoon as it is through such support that they could support the programmes of the GABA,” said Mr. Ninvalle. The other representatives of GABA present at the ceremony were Vice President, Maurice Rajkumar and Public Relations Officer (PRO), Shawn Richmond.
In response to Mr. Ninvalle’s sentiments, Mr. Kissoon reaffirmed his company’s commitment to the development of local boxers and further promised to continue in this vein for future programmes.
Meanwhile, Personnel Human Resource Manager of A H & L Kissoon Ltd Deo, reminded media representatives that his organization has always responded affirmatively to requests for support, not only from GABA but also executives of other associations, federations and sports groups.
He said the management of A H & L Kissoon regards such gestures as a national duty and is more than willing to acquiesce to similar responses in the future.
Mr. Rajkumar echoed Ninvalle’s sentiments and promised to utilize the gifts to the fullest. He said that two of the punching bags would be immediately installed in the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, to enhance the training sessions of the boxers preparing for the Olympic box off in Panama sometime next month. The GABA Vice President also reminded media operatives that the management of AH&L Kissoon had been one of the driving forces behind the refurbishment of the Harpy Eagle’s Boxing Gym, donating generously to the cause. “We are indeed grateful for this assistance and envisage much more in the future,” concluded Mr. Rajkumar.
