The Guyana Post Office Corporation has reversed a systematic culture, where it previously allowed senior postal staff to borrow monies with the intention of replacing that borrowed cash.
In the process it has dismissed a post mistress who borrowed from the funds without proper authorisation.
Area Manager, Anthony Farley, investigated the matter that led to the sacking of a post mistress attached to the Queenstown Post office, Judy Seymour, who was found to have ‘borrowed’ $10,000.
Farley, who said he personally had nothing to do with Judy Seymour’s dismissal, noted that the post office corporation has implemented a new dimension eliminating the system that would have allowed postal staff to borrow monies.
“The system was allowed to continue in a particular way; it was allowed to breed a particular culture.”
According to a source, Mrs. Seymour told the investigators that she was expecting a cheque in the mail.
The report further stated that before the cheque was received at Queenstown; it went to Suddie, where Seymour previously executed her duties, before it was later referred to Queenstown, later that day.
This newspaper, understands, that later that day, Seymour informed Mr. Farley about what she had done and told the area Manager that she was going to replace the cash the following day.
Farley said that after listening to Mrs. Seymour, he prepared a report, along with some recommendations. In the proposed recommendation, Farley outlined a few areas for his superiors to consider.
In those areas, Farley said he made mention that the money taken by Seymour was insignificant, was later repaid, and that Seymour confessed. He said that he recommended that Seymour be transferred to the Anna Regina post office, whereby, Seymour would not have been the final person to be in receipt of cash at the end of the day.
Farley, who said that Seymour’s dismissal was very unfortunate, opined that Seymour could have come to him in the first place and explain that she was facing a personal issue with cash.
Seymour, who has three children, has also lost 20 years of service.
