– family suspects arson
A ‘D’ Field, Sophia family of six is homeless as fire destroyed their two-storey house at lot 528 yesterday at approximately 10:00am.
Shawn Fiffee, head of the family, is of the belief that the fire was intentionally set to remove them from the untitled land that is under dispute.
The Fiffees have been occupying the land since 2002 and in 2006 a woman approached the family claiming that the land belongs to her.
However, it was revealed that no one living near the family has any title for their lands.
Kaieteur News was told that the matter is being dealt with at the level of the Ministry of Housing.
A frustrated Fiffee stated that the house did not receive electricity from Guyana Power Light Inc. and there was nothing flammable in the house to create the blaze.
No one reported seeing anyone leaving the scene, but neighbours revealed that if indeed the fire was intentionally set the perpetrator could have escaped through the bushes undetected.
The man noted that when the fire service arrived the top flat was already destroyed. The family’s vehicle, which was parked in the yard at the time was damaged but the shop that is in front of the yard was unharmed.
According to the fire department investigations are ongoing into the cause of the fire.
