A helmet-trick (4) of goals by striker Azad DeAbreu led all scorers as the Carib All-Stars steamrolled the under-21’s 7-1 as play in the John Fernandes Insurance Services (JFIS) Ltd Second Division Hockey League continued on Saturday, at Thirst Park.
DeAbreu opened his team’s account with a deflection goal in just the 8th minute and proceeded to score three more by full time, but it was his spectacular diving shot to earn his third goal of the match that was the most entertaining.
Philip Fernandes, Dexter Wyles and Colin Aaron by virtue of a penalty stroke rounded out the score sheet for the All-Stars, while promising midfielder, Ryan Primo netted the lone goal for the under-21.
Despite, the imbalanced score line, the under-21 did manage to string together several clever build-ups with Primo and Leon Bacchus displaying good skills and composure. The All-Stars defence, however, comprised of mostly former national players remained virtually impenetrable.
In the second match of the afternoon, Old Fort Second Division chalked up their first win with a 4-1 beating of the Airbenders.
While, the game got off to an even start, skilful midfielder Jason De Santos soon began to show his quality and made the difference between the two sides.
De Santos score the only two goals of the first half, in the 18th and 34th, minute with nippy individual runs and the second goal coming off a spectacular reverse shot that blew past the stunned Airbenders goalkeeper.
The Airbenders clawed one back with the first goal of the second-half, 8 minutes in, through a penalty stroke by Chantelle Fernandes earned from a swift counter-attack to take the score to 2-1 in favour of Old Fort.
De Santos, however, struck similar fashion in the 53rd minute and Kevin Melville added another 7 minutes later to take the Old Fort lead to 4-1 and pull off a convincing victory.
The Carib Allstars now lead the points standing with 7 points followed by GCC on 6, Hikers on 4, Old Fort on 3, under-21 with just 1 and the Airbenders yet to earn points. Each team has at least two matches remaining in the first of the competition’s two rounds.
Matches continue today with the Airbenders seeking to earn their first points against the Hikers at GCC, while Old Fort tries to harness the impressive run of the Carib Allstars at DCC.
All matches are scheduled to start at 16:45hrs.
