Dear Editor,
I am just writing this letter to highlight the plight of the commuters who travel from Georgetown to Mahdia.
A couple of years ago when the fuel price rose in Guyana, the mini bus operators increased their fares. Those in Mahdia increased theirs from $5000 to $6000. However, when the price of fuel dropped, all the other mini bus operators reduced their fares but those in Mahdia did not.
Now, about two months ago the mini bus operators plying the Georgetown-Mahdia route increased their fares by $1000. Mr. Editor, I believe these mini bus operators are unscrupulous.
When you calculate a trip in and out of Mahdia-26 passengers at $6000-you get $156,000 per trip. That is not all, passengers with excess load have to pay the extra, while additionally people pay to send cargo alone.
These operators use about 20 gallons of gasoline per round trip; they pay $14,000 to cross with the pontoon at mango landing. This is about $34,000 in expenses.
When you discount the expenses, from a possible $156,000, you are left with $122,000, plus the money received from the extra load such as goods.
Mr. Editor, for the mini bus operators to say that $6000 cannot pay them and for them to be demanding $7000, is ridiculous.
Even though Mahdia is within a mining district, everyone there is not involved in mining for a living. Seven thousand dollars is even too expensive for some of the miners.
