– Bristol lends significant support to 2012 programme
The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) is in the process of looking for corporate partnerships to aid their quest at securing medals at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The association is set to participate in several events overseas as they seek to hone the skills of the team of boxers chosen to prepare for possible selection to this prestigious event. Kaieteur Sport spoke to GABA president Steve Ninvalle and he explained that they have started fund raising activities, but their efforts alone cannot foot the bills to prepare and take their fighters overseas.
Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) through its president K. Juman Yassin, has donated $2,000US to aid their travel to the up coming box-off in Panama set for July 1-8. They need a total $1.6M to cover that cost. Ninvalle informed that GABA chose five boxers and three officials to attend the box off. The boxers are: Bert Braithwaite, Dexter Wray, Stephon Gouveia, Imran Khan and Markember Pierre. The officials are Vice President Eustace Cuffy, coaches Terrence Poole and James Walcott.
Another tournament fixed for Venezuela July 18-30 will also see Guyana being represented by six boxers and an official. Ninvalle stated that he is looking forward for tangible partnerships with the corporate sector and even government to boost the little they have and will garner in the coming weeks. He stressed the need for this type of partnership, noting that this is the only way to eclipse Michael Parris’ feat in 1980 in Moscow of claiming a bronze medal, Guyana’s lone Olympic success to date.
He strengthened his case informing that boxing is the only sport to have brought Guyana an Olympic medal and also world titles. Ninvalle indicated that this week and beyond where necessary GABA will be following up on letters to several corporate entities for assistance.
GABA has a plan to have individuals or a business house sponsor several or at least one boxer of the 16 chosen to prepare for the Olympic Games in 2012. That person or business will fund their preparation until the event which will help GABA channel scarce funding to other necessary areas including some of the younger fighters.
Meanwhile, one former boxer, now promoter, Seon Bristol, has heard and responded to the appeal of GABA forthwith. Bristol has decided to sponsor the training programme of Stephon Gouveia for the games. Ninvalle expressed elation at the gesture and is looking forward for similar support.
GABA will also attend the Youth Commonwealth Games fixed for the Isles of Mann from September 7 to 13 in a very busy schedule in their quest to medal in London. Khan and Mervin Ageday will represent the country at this event.
