Local middleweight boxing contender, Winston Pompey suffered a humiliating fifth round knockout when he faced off with Jamaica, Sakima Mullings at the Karl Hendrickson Auditorium, Jamaica College, Jamaica, Thursday evening.
Pompey’s record now dips to 13 fights, 4 wins, seven losses and 2 draws, while Mullings’ record improves to 6 fights with just one loss on debut.
The bout was slated for 10 rounds and was an elimination fight for the Commonwealth Zonal middleweight title. Reports from the Tourist Island state that that Mullings recovered from a cut to the forehead in the second round after an accidental clash of heads. Three rounds later he unleashed a sustained attack which staggered the Guyanese pugilist, subjecting him to the count from which he never recovered. The win now puts the Jamaican in line for a shot at the prestigious title later in the year.
Meanwhile, Jamaica Boxing Board of Control president Stephen Jones recently spoke to The Observer and revealed that the local body will be working hard to ensure the momentum gained from the recent series will be sustained. He was speaking of a recent initiative in the Island dubbed ‘’The Contender’ series. The just concluded card originated from a new initiative dubbed ‘Hands of Gold Fight Night Series,’ a similar initiative to the local month end ProAm boxing cards inaugurated by the executives of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC).
Mr. Jones plans to take the cards to Montego Bay, St James and Treasure Beach in St Elizabeth at later dates.
