A Corentyne woman who professed to be an employee of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) and fraudulently collected money from a number of unsuspecting customers on the Corentyne, was fined $50,000.
She was placed before the court and pleaded guilty.
Rupawa Seenarine, 40, of Lot 2 Adventure, Corentyne appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Whim Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to nine charges of obtaining money by false pretence.
According to the prosecution the woman had worked out a well thought out plan to defraud the residents of their hard earned gains.
On Monday June 8, after arming herself with a GWI Badge bearing her name, the utility’s logo, and photograph, she proceeded to John’s and Tain villages on the Corentyne Berbice, where she told the unsuspecting residents that she was employed by Guyana Water Inc (GWI).
She demanded of the residents that they pay her $2,000 each in order for them to have a filter installed on their pipeline, failing which they will be faced with disconnection.
The residents Parbattie Seodat, Gaitri Kanhai, Jemwattie Hemlall, Chandrawattie Baijnauth, Devi Narine, Melowattie Seodat, Anuradha Somar, Bishshaut Harrillall and Tackoor Puran Nauth, all of John’s, and Tain, proceeded to hand over $2,000 each to the fraudster.
The residents subsequently became suspicious and reported the matter to the GWI Chesney Corentyne office where the staff had no knowledge of any campaign in the area. The police were contacted and along with GWI employees raced to the area where the woman was located and nabbed in the act.
She had in her possession $22,000 and a book with the complainants’ signatures.
