– delays 350 new services, repair of faults
Several acts of vandalism on telephone cables have left a number of communities without service and the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) saying that it is severely affecting maintenance works.
The most recent spate of vandalism over the last week has affected the services of more than 10,000 customers in Berbice, and on the East Bank and East Coast of Demerara.
Telephone services have been disrupted in areas such as Houston, where a buried distribution cable was vandalised. D’Aguiar Park and surrounding areas have also been affected.
On the East Coast, a similar distribution cable was damaged on Sugrim Singh Road, Ogle, resulting in customers in Oleander and Shamrock Gardens being affected.
Currently, there is also a vandalised cable in Cummings Lodge School Road, East Coast Demerara, South of the Railway Embankment.
Approximately 390 customers are affected, GT&T said in a statement yesterday.
And the Linden exchange has been hit by persistent vandalism incoveniencing hundreds of customers.
“The diversion of the technical teams to the frequent disruption means that installation for new services is delayed by weeks, and repairs and maintenance of regular customers’ services are also affected.”
In addition, GT&T says, emergency services are disrupted since customers cannot get access to the police or other emergency help areas.
“And, access to the internet is disrupted. The volume of disruptions in 2011 has pushed back installation of 350 new lines and repairs to over 300 faults.”
According to GT&T, while it remains committed to offering the “best telecommunications services” to the country, it is affected by the “needless disruptions”.
“The associated costs and loss of revenue has been quantified at over US$2 million. We sincerely regret the needless inconvenience these malicious acts have rendered and we urge all Guyanese to be vigilant and to immediately report any suspected acts of vandalism of any of GT&T’s cables and equipment to our ‘Vandalism Hotline” number – 0908.”
