– had pounced on couple in Botanical Gardens
A brazen thief got more than he bargained for in the Botanical Gardens early yesterday morning, shortly after he had pounced on a young couple.
Reports are that some time around 10:30 hours, the man, who has since been identified as 20-year-old Christopher Smith, saw a couple in the Botanical Gardens and decided that what they had belonged to him and his friends.
This publication was told that a male and a female were sitting by the Mausoleum near the Seven Ponds Monument when the man pounced on them. According to eyewitnesses, Smith, who was earlier seen riding a bicycle, attacked the couple with a knife and a broken bottle.
“This man go up to them and try to snatch the girl chain, and as soon as he rush the girl, the boy start to scream for help,” an eyewitness recounted.
But Smith did not back off. He decided that the chain was easy pickings and he was not prepared to leave without it.
The eyewitness said that Smith told the man to scream all he wanted, that he was going to take the chain because there is no one to help them.
He did not bargain for the Presidential Guards who were in close proximity. They immediately ran to the couple’s aid.
Kaieteur News understands that after the thief noticed the guards coming towards him, he made a dash for a nearby clump of bushes, and then jumped into the trench to make his way to the burnt-out Ministry of Housing site on Homestretch Avenue on the other side.
But as he almost reached across the trench he was confronted by another set of Presidential Guards on Homestretch Avenue. They guessed at the direction Smith would run.
Smith saw them, became confused and decided to cross back into the Botanical Gardens.
Two of the ranks jumped into the trench, fully clothed in their uniforms, and one of them eventually apprehended the bewildered suspect. The man surrendered without a struggle when he saw a civilian standing on the parapet with a sledgehammer.
The civilian was one of the people who was about to attack Smith with serious consequences.
Smith was swiftly whisked away to be processed at the police station and an eyewitness said that he never saw a man so happy to be in police custody.
