A man-of-the match performance from pacer Andre Russell and half-centuries from Ramnaresh Sarwan and Daren Bravo helped West Indies to another consolation win in the final match of the five-match ODI series yesterday in Jamaica.
West Indies, like they did against Pakistan lost the first three matches before ending the dead rubber with back-to back wins but Skipper Daren Sammy was impressed with the pace and bounce in the Sabina Park track and feels the pitch will suit his team in the opening Test which starts at the same venue on Monday.
“Credit must go to all the bowlers who came back very well to limit India after their good start. It looked like we would chase 300 at one stage,” Sammy said after the match. “It was a decision we had to take, Sarwan was cramping, thought it would be good for the team if a new batter came in,” Sammy explained when asked if it was in the best interest for the well set Sarwan to retire on 75 from 94 balls after suffering from cramps.
Bravo hit six sixes and three fours in his 99-ball 86 before Marlon Samuels and Keiron Pollard finished the game with eight balls to spare and Sammy said that while Bravo began a bit slowly he accelerated at the right time to put the team on course for their seven wicket win.
“We all know what Bravo is capable of doing. We have to start well in the future. The wicket looks like a good one and will suit us for the Test.” Sammy added.
Suresh Raina in his first series as Indian Captain said while he would have loved to win all the games the objective was winning the series.
“Now that we have won the series it is important to enjoy the moment. I would say we were short by 25-30 runs today and they bowled well in the end,” Raina said.
The Skipper, one of the players who will remain for the Test series in a team missing top order batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and Verwinder Saywag was pleased with his form despite failing to score yesterday.
“I was looking good, I need to spend some time in the middle, I just can’t go in and play big shots, will look to have a couple of sessions with the coach ahead of the first Test.” He informed.
Rohit Sharma who was named the Man-of-the-Series after making 57 yesterday said “it was important for him to get some runs. He ended with the most runs in the series and along with Sarwan were the only batsmen to score 200 runs in the five-match series.
“I wanted to make this tour count, glad it came off well. I kept telling myself I had to stay in the middle as long as possible, wanted to take the game through to the end. Was very disappointed in the last two games, today I could have taken it to the 48th or 49th over, but it happens at times.”
Russell who took 4-35 from 8.3 overs was named the Man-of-the-Match and said that the West Indies played good cricket over the past two games.
“The key to my success was being positive and getting the ball in the right areas.
It was a good wicket to bowl on in the morning. One or two of the Indian batsmen are not accustomed to the short ball, so I tried to use it as a surprise weapon, but when I did, I put everything in it.” The Jamaican fast bowling all rounder said.
The West Indies team for the first Test has not yet been announced but it is understood that Chris Gayle is unlikely to play on his home ground.
