Dear Editor,
All this talk about a Joint Opposition People’s Partnership (JOPP) to the best of most people’s knowledge the functioning parties are the PPP, PNC and the AFC. To the other parties, GPP, GAP, WPA and NFA, the following questions are asked:
a) Who are the leaders in GPP, what is its membership size, and when last a convention was held, if any, to elect leaders?
b) When last did the WPA hold any convention to elect its leaders and what is its membership strength?
c) Who make up GAP and NFA, their total membership, when last did they run any elections to elect their leaders and who are they?
d) What are the GPP, WPA, GAP and NFA bringing to the JOPP?
The concern is, if these parties can’t manage at least the semblance of an orderly organisation, have a valid membership register, answerable to the members and selected by the members, then how can they run for office much less govern a country properly?
Another point; GECOM’s registration, claims and objections are already over and these non-entity parties were nowhere out there in the sun, doing the hard work and registering people. The parties in the field were the PPP, AFC and PNC.
Many think they are naked opportunists. The average person you talk to think these small parties are crashers and only join the JOPP for selfish reasons which are most likely to get government positions or an easy ticket to parliament to live a sweet life off of us. Most of the ‘politicians’ have not been visible. They have been absent from every day matters that plague the people. You can count on one hand who are the people fighting for the poor and disadvantaged and they aren’t among them. People don’t see them as committed to the people. They are seen more like trying to use the people to enrich themselves and bullying the PNC and AFC to give them a free pass.
In other countries journalists would see a story here and be all over it, asking questions, with the sole motive of getting to the truth and ensuring that the taxpaying public is not being duped by opportunists.
In those countries politics is serious business and those who offer themselves for public service are subject to rigorous scrutiny and held to high standards. The media would guard the public purse and protect the people by going after them with tough questions. Politicians here think voters cannot think for themselves and they can get away doing what they feel like doing to us. Please, media, help us out on this one. Many are concerned about the hidden agenda of these fly by night and defunct parties with no constituents.
Thomas Bradford.
