Local middleweight boxing contender Winston Pompey leaves the country this morning for Jamaica to engage in a ten rounds contest against Jamaican, Sakima Mullings. The local pugilist will enter the ring on Thursday night and yesterday afternoon rounded off training sessions with twelve hectic rounds between Mark Austin, Denny Dalton and Ray Sandiford. All of Pompey’s sparring partners are in top shape due to the fact that they are preparing for fistic duties in this month end ProAm affair scheduled for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Friday June 24. He would be accompanied by his coach George ‘Kanchi’ Oprecht.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport moments after his charge had wrapped up training sessions, Oprecht exuded confidence saying that he expects Pompey to do well. “His punches are crisp and he is in great shape,” said Oprecht. The top coach stopped short of predicting a knockout but said that he would not be surprised if the bout ends inside the distance in favour of his charge.
The local lad had resumed training sessions shortly after dropping a close decision to Lindener, Edmond DeClou less than three weeks ago in a special card organized by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC).
Pompey explained that President of the governing body, Peter Abdool, had been instrumental in arranging the fight. He said that he relished the opportunity to practice his trade internationally and is confident of victory.
While Pompey boasts a record of 12 fights, 4 wins, six losses and 2 draws, Mullings’ record reads 5 fights with just one loss on debut. Three of his opponents never made it to the final bell. The Jamaican national has never fought outside the island while Pompey has fought twice, albeit in losing efforts, in Trinidad and Tobago and St Martin.
Meanwhile, Pompey said that he is confident of winning the bout even though he knows little of his opponent. He admitted that Mullings has an impressive record but noted that most of his fights occurred in his backyard. “I am fit and ready and am going to take this fight,” said Pompey.
