Plans on stream for new access road to Timehri Airport

– Ministry awaits Cabinet’s approval for multi-million- dollar project

Almost a week ago the Ministry of Public Works accepted bids for the construction of a new access road to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri. The bids came from Kares Inc., $688,505,750; Dipcon Engineering Services Ltd., $728,672,064; Courtney Benn Contracting Services Ltd., $726,444,350; Falcon Transportation and Construction, $692,600,200; BK International Inc., $558,451,600; C.O. Williams Construction Ltd. (Barbados),                 $1,509,220,961; H. Nauth & Sons, $817,892,500; and Geico Construction and General Service Inc., $579,696,750.
The Engineer’s estimate for the project stands at $764,473,800.
Engineer attached to the Ministry of Public Works, Mr. Ron Rahaman said that the evaluation process of the bids has been completed and submitted to the Tender Board. Currently the Ministry is awaiting the approval from Cabinet.
According to Rahaman the project once approved will see the construction of a 2.5-kilometer stretch of road starting from the Timehri Police Station to the entrance of the airport.
Rahaman explained that the road will see two additional lanes north to the existing road each separated by medians. There will also be a paved sidewalk with concrete drains.
This project, Rahaman said, will run for 12 months. The authorities are looking for an alternative location for the Timehri market as well as a new location for those vendors along the current road leading to the airport.
It has also been highlighted that the road work is a part of the bigger picture for the four-lane highway from Georgetown to Timehri.
Works are being done from Providence to Diamond; bridges are being widened. However, for the remaining stretch between Diamond and Timehri the relevant studies are being conducted.
According to Rahaman, the Grove, New Hope and Craig area have been listed as concern. The New Hope and Craig area, Rahaman said is prone to flooding during high tides given the proximity of the Demerara River.
For those areas Rahaman said they have come up with two options one which can see a possible diversion as they maintain the current two lane and move ahead with plans to reinforce to sea defense in those locations.
