Maintenance works are currently being executed at Pirara and Meritizero on the Linden to Lethem Road, says Minister of Transport and Hydraulics, Robeson Benn.
Owing to continuous rainfall in the hinterland region and the backing up of the Rio Branco the Linden to Lethem Road deteriorated in some sections.
Vital structures such as culverts and bridges along the stretch were affected and efforts are being made to restore them. However, “No big time contract works can be done; any attempt will wash away because of the rain,” Minister Benn added.
He noted that two crews are in the area repairing bridges. Last week employees from the Ministry commenced works in Pirara going to Kurupukari while Roger King, a contractor in Lethem started executing works to bridges in Kurupukari going to Mabura this week.
The condition of the Linden to Lethem Road worsened during May when heavy rainfall and water coming down from the mountains flooded the road.
The deterioration of the road increased when water from the Rio Branco began to overflow its bank.
The deplorable condition of the road when it rains continuously has contributed to Intra Serv, a bus service from Georgetown to Lethem closing its operations.
Dr. Roger Luncheon, Head of the Presidential Secretariat, had stated that even if the stretch was paved the flooding of the road could not have been prevented.
A feasibility study for the paving of the stretch was done and is being reviewed, Minister Benn stated.
In early May the Ministry awarded three contracts totaling $193M to contractors for the execution of rehabilitation and maintenance works on 265 miles of the Linden to Lethem roadway.
