– Carib All stars and Hikers also record wins
Fifteen year old Mark Sargeant produced a breakout performance by producing an unanswered double for his GCC club to help them secure a 2-0 victory over the national under-21 side in their John Fernandes Insurance Services Second Division clash on Sunday, at the GCC ground, Bourda.
After a scoreless first half, Sargeant received a pass in the scoring circle, dragged the ball to his right and swept his shot past the left leg of the advancing under-21 goalkeeper to give his team the lead in the 55th minute.
With youth on their side, the under-21 boys worked hard throughout the match, but never seemed to have the quality of finish required to match the more experienced GCC.
Nine minutes after his remarkable opening goal, Sargeant proved a further menace to the under-21 side as he latched onto a long pass out of defence to outpace his opposition, before blasting home his and the team’s second and final goal of the match.
The victory ensured that GCC maintained its position on top of the points standing with two victories in as many matches.
The Airbenders got off to a rocky start on the day with a 0-7 loss in their first match of the tournament against a strong Carib All star team.
The ladies could not overcome their nerves in the early minutes and succumbed to the pressure of the veteran All stars with Azad DeAbreu and Timothy Jonas each scoring in the first 5 minutes of the match for the All stars.
Former international tandem strike-force of David Fernandes and Ian Nicholson each scored one, before the half to take the All stars tally to 4 at the half.
The Airbenders found better form in the second period and were able to launch some meaningful attacks, but the All stars matched every challenge to keep them scoreless.
The game was placed beyond doubt when the All stars poured in three more goals, before full time through Brian Asregado, James Mentore and David Fernandes, his second of the match, to finish with the win.
The Hikers dished out a 3-0 beating to Old Fort to complete the triple header and keep their second place position in the table standings.
The powerful Randy Hope scored the lone first half goal with one of his trademark powerful strikes just 3 minutes before the break. On the resumption, Hikers tightened their grip on the match when Aroydy Branford scored just two minutes in and promising Jamarj Assanah finished with one of his own in the final minute of the match.
GCC sits on top of the pool with 6 points, while Hikers and Carib All stars are tied in second place with 4 points each. The Airbenders were scheduled to take on under-21 in the next competition clash yesterday, at the same venue, while matches that were missed during the rainy weather are being rescheduled.
