West Demerara beat East Bank by four wickets at the Eve Leary ground yesterday in the final match of the 50-overs Demerara Inter Association under-19 cricket competition to finish at the top of the points table.
However, up to late yesterday it was unclear who the champions were since Georgetown had the same amount of points as West Demerara from the same number of matches.
It is understood that the match between Georgetown and West Demerara which was originally scheduled for the Providence Stadium before being switched to Eve Leary will not be replayed after the two teams turned up at separate venues for their game on Wednesday.
Yesterday, East Bank sunk to their third consecutive defeat after they were bowled out for 109 in 41.2 overs with pacer John Paton (15) being the only batsman to reach double figures on a slow pitch with variable bounce although Extras top scored with 46 including 28 wides.
Left-arm spinner Zafar Sookwah had 3-22 from 10 overs and leg-spinner Krishna Kumar 3-10 from 4.2 for West Demerara who reached 110-6 from 30.3 overs.
Travis Cato (27*) added 30 in an unfinished 30-run partnership with Kumar (2*) after Navid Ali was taken in the deep going over the top to former Guyana under-15 off-spinner Jagdesh Bishun who finished with 3-26 from 10 overs in a losing effort. Shivnauth Persaud supported with 2-17.
The competition was organized by the Guyana Cricket Board to help their national youth selectors pick the Demerara team for the GTM Inter County competition which is set to start on Monday at Providence. (Sean Devers)
