Berbice face Essequibo at Providence in opening match
Despite all the problems affecting Guyana’s cricket in recent times their longest sponsor GTM continues to be on board in the drive to develop this country’s teenage cricketers in an effort to produce future West Indies players.
GTM has been sponsoring Guyana’s under-19 three-day Inter County tournament since 1976 and now sponsors both the three-day and one day competitions.
Yesterday at their head office in Georgetown, Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) President Chetram Singh collected the sponsorship cheque from GTM’s Marketing Manager Aneeta Shivpersaud in the presence of GTM’s Edward Persico and Guyana’s newest West Indies under-19 players, Ronsford Beaton, Amir Khan and Kwame Crosse, who will all participate in this year’s competition.
Persico said GTM was pleased to be continuing their partnership with the GCB for the county’s premier youth tournament which will be used to help select the Guyana team for next month’s Regional under-19 series in Guyana and explained that the sponsorship covered the entire cost to run off the three-team Inter-County tournament.
Singh, who will not seek re-election at the GCB’s next elections after being at the helm of the Board since 1991, expressed gratitude to GTM for their contribution to Guyana youth cricket and expressed the hope that the partnership will continue for many years to come.
Berbice clash with Essequibo from Monday at the Providence Stadium in the first round of the three-day competition before Demerara battle Essequibo at the same venue from June 17-19. Berbice and Demerara will face-off in the final round at Providence from June 21-23.
The 50-over competition bowls off on June 25 when Essequibo play Demerara at Providence, while Berbice and Essequibo square off on June 27 and Berbice and Demerara meet on June 29 with both matches fixed for the Providence Stadium.
In the last three decades, every Guyanese West Indian Test player except left-arm spinner Neil McGarrell participated in the GTM competition with Berbice leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo, who made his Test debut against Pakistan last month, being the last GTM player to play Test cricket.
