The GBTI Tennis Open commences today at the GBTI Sports Club in Bel Air Park with 130 entrants competing in twelve categories.
A number of keen rivalries are anticipated in the respective categories, especially in the Men’s Division where four former champions are expected to compete for the title.
Phillip Squires and Anthony Downes, two dominant players in the past will have to be at their best to challenge top seed and defending champion Jeremy Miller and second seed Ezra Sue-Ho, who recently won the last Men’s Open title at the Macorp Open.
The men’s Doubles category is also expected to have close matches as most of the teams are good enough to capture the title.
Defending champions Jeremy Miller/Jason Andrews can expect stiff competition from the combinations of Godfrey Lowden/Phillip Squires, Leyland Leacock & Anthony Downes, Sandeep Chand/Andre Lopes and junior pair Daniel Lopes/Gavin Lewis who have all made it to the final stages in previous tournaments.
In the Women’s category top juniors Shawna Gentle and Aruna Ramrattan will be the main challengers to defending champion Carol Humphrey, while in the Under 18 Boys category top seeds Gavin Lewis and Daniel Lopes will renew their rivalry
In the senior categories, Godfrey Lowden and Omar Persaud will look to add to their titles in Doubles
competition, while strong competition is expected amongst top players Andre Lopes, Don Singh ,Rudy Grant and Carlos Adams for the Men’s 35’s title.
For the first time there will be competition in the Novices category where 28 entrants will battle it out in best of three tie-break sets over the course of the next two weeks.
The tournament concludes on the 26th the June.
Matches in the junior categories will be played from 08:00 hrs, while play will start at 17:00 hrs5 each day for seniors.
Thi Fernandes and Carol Humphrey will team up against Aruna Ramrattan/Shawna Gentle in match one, while Leyland Leacock/Anthony Downes play Gairy Myers /Adam Alves in the other opening match.
