Ever since ‘Dangerous’ Denny Dalton entered the ring against Rawle Frank, in a losing effort in November last year, he has not entered the ring, so naturally he will have to fight off the rust when he battles against Trinidadian based Guyanese, Joel McRae, in this month’s ProAm affair at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Friday June 24.
Sporting a record of 16-8-1 with 11KOs, Dalton will naturally nurture hopes of winning the bout and reinstating himself as a formidable foe on the local boxing front. McRae is yet to arrive in Guyana but reports from Trinidad suggest that he has heightened his preparations with several sessions against Trinidadian Kurt Sinette and would be out to erase the blotches of his drawn decision against James Walcott on debut and a loss to Edmond DeClou in December last year.
Dalton was at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG) when Kaieteur Sport visited to assess the boxers’ progress. Under the guidance of George ‘Kanchi’ Oprecht, Dalton attempted to throw off the shackles with several intense rounds on the heavy bag and a few on the speed ball. He also stitched in some valuable leg work, bouncing on a heavy truck tyre as his coach directed his progress. “Dalton will win this one easily,” was Oprecht’s prognosis. The coach further stated that his charge will commence sparring tomorrow morning at 10:00hrs.
Apart from Dalton, Oprecht is also in charge of Eversley Brown, Mark Austin and Ray Sandiford who fight Simeon Hardy, Revlon Lake and Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers, respectively. The former trio really packed the hour as skins glistened and perspiration flew in the air. There were thudding sounds as the heavy punching bag was severely tested, followed by the staccato beat of the overhead ball as the boxers defied the odds to whip themselves into shape. Late into the afternoon, the pugilistic group rounded off sessions with brisk skipping and calisthenics.
The card promises to be another scorcher as the respective pugilists aspire to establish themselves on the local scene and further, make the transition onto the world arena. Already several of the boxers have benefited from the initiative, winning the local title in their respective divisions and in other cases, the Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) title.
Only two weeks ago, Kurt Bess, a virtual nonentity at the inauguration of the cards, managed to dethrone former heavyweight king, Mitchell Rogers with a stunning left hook. President of the Guyana Boxing board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool is confident that local pugilists will continue to benefit and would eventually become world champions provided they remain focused. Additionally, Mr. Abdool is grateful for the huge support received from several corporate entities including Courts, which provide large hampers and gift vouchers for the amateur boxers, Ansa McAl, Guyoil, Singers and a host of other corporate entities.
Patrons are reminded that those in possession of special passes may not be admitted as the suspension of those passes was only for the special card last month.
The ProAm boxing extravaganza is a Guyana boxing Board of Control presentation in collaboration with the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), National Communications Network (NCN) and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS). As usual there will be a live broadcast on NCN and the action gets underway at 20:00hrs.
