Stating vigorously that every player on the team knows the importance of tomorrow’s game, Head Coach of the national Rugby squad Theodore Henry told Kaieteur Sport that he sees no need for him to stress it further.
Henry, who is spearheading Guyana’s preparation for the final game against Barbados in the NACRA 15’s Championship to be played at the National Stadium speaking about the team’s preparations said that yesterday’s sessions was more of a dress rehearsal for the upcoming assignment, adding that it entailed putting the entire game plan into motion and getting all the players to understand and respond to the system they intend to employ against the Bajans.
Guyana recently broke into the Top 60 on the IRB ranking list after the win in Trinidad & Tobago and is currently ranked at 57th climbing seven places from its previous position and a win against the visitors will assure them a clash against Bermuda for the overall title.
Henry recalled that the last time the two teams played in the 15’s format, Barbados erased a first half deficit to defeat the Guyanese at home in 2005, but was adamant that no such thing will occur this time around.
“I’m urging all of Guyana to come out and offer their support for the team. In Trinidad and Tobago we had a sprinkling of Guyanese at the game, but they were vociferous and really encouraged us to defeat the defending champions,” Henry said.
He revealed that they know the Bajans style of play and have designed a game plan to counter their approach.
Quizzed on the mood in the team, Henry disclosed that the players are all in good shape and in positive spirits and just anxious to get into battle and execute in front of what is anticipated to be a large home crowd.
Commenting on his own mood and whether he is feeling the pressure of coaching at home in such an important fixture, Henry in response informed that there is some amount of pressure, but the way the guys played against T&T has given him great ease and confidence.
He said he expects the senior players such as Richard Staglon, Kevin McKenzie, Claudius Butts, Ryan Gonsalves, Dwayne Schroeder and Ronald Mayers to shoulder most of the responsibility and hopefully their impact is enough to inspire the younger and less experienced members of the team.
He added that the expectation is to win and he anticipates an exciting game.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Rugby Football Union announced the names of 22 players and three reserves for the clash.
Those named are: Forwards- Jason Tyrell, Rondel McArthur, Allain Crawford, Walter George, Dwayne Schoreder, Avery Corbin, Richard Staglon, Vallon Adams ; Half Backs- Ryan Gonsalves, Christopher Singh; Backs- Ronald Mayers, Kevin McKenzie, Claudius Butts, Elwin Chase, Rodwell Hutson, Ryan Hinckson, Delroy Gordon, Jermaine Prowell, Jose Felicien, Leon Greaves, Rickford Cummings and Troy Arjoon. The reserves are: Daniel Anderson, Breon Walks and Trevon Inglis. Physiotherapist is Arianne Mangar, while the Manager is Peter Campayne.
The Bajans are expected to arrive in Guyana sometime today for tomorrow’s clash. Admission to the Stadium tomorrow is free with scrum off time set for 16:00hrs.
