League for organisations set to start next month
Neal and Massy Group of Companies ensured that obvious preparation and organisation helped them retake the Inter-Organisation Basketball Championship early Thursday Morning at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall following hours of gruelling competition.
In the end, when the dust was settled after the final chapter of the tournament that started Sunday and continued Wednesday night into Thursday morning Neal and Massy Group was the last team standing from eight of the best teams through the championships.
They defeated underdogs John Fernandes Limited, a side that was equipped with five players and that knocked out finals favourites, Guyana Geology and Mines in the semis. Neal and Massy was on top of their game against John Fernandes with a 21-12 victory. National Forward, Royston Siland scored six points and Travis ‘Cook-Up’ Foster six points in an overwhelming win for the Group. Neal and Massy dominated both ends of the court in the seven-and-half-minutes per half that was allowed for the tournament final.
Former national forward, Dane Kendall had six points and lots of old tricks that were too archaic to outdo a horde of quality players at Neal and Massy. Shooting guard, Stephan Gillis and former sharp shooter, Frank Belle was among the main casts for the Group.
On their way to the final Neal and Massy thrashed the National Insurance Scheme with Geology and Mines stumbling against John Fernandes. The four teams had defeated a few quality sides in the semis, including The Media, which played two quarterfinal games.
The event was forced into Wednesday night owed to the amount of games that were to be played and the time allotted for use of the Sports Hall. However, the dread of Sunday returned when the exact fear became a reality as it related to the timeliness of the games.
The remaining preliminary games commenced around 7pm Wednesday night before the second round of the tournament. Neal and Massy and all the other teams that qualified, with defending champs, Guyana Power and Light being disconnected, stuck through hours of gruelling contests for a last round that started around 2am Thursday at the Sports Hall.
Hosts of the event, VP Update’s Vijay Panday contended that he was not aware of the magnitude of the tournament and as such, he felt that a day was enough for completion. The tournament was meant for workers so they stuck it out even though yesterday was a working day.
Panday told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that a Basketball League for organisations is scheduled to commence on July 1. He said that the top organisations from this week’s event will be invited to compete in the League that will have cash prizes up for grabs.
He thanked Digicel, Neal and Massy Group of Companies, Ansa Mcal Trading through their Mackeson brand, HJTV, Lens Craft Optical and Giftland OfficeMax for their support. Panday said that the event will be bigger and better in the years to come based on the 2011 response.
