Six persons are now homeless after being forcefully evicted yesterday from a property they had occupied for the past 45 years at lot 36, Public Road Kitty.
Two of the occupants who were left in charge of the house as caretakers by the proprietor who died, are claiming that the persons behind the eviction have forged documents to facilitate the eviction since relatives of the proprietor are not in the country to represent the house and land.
According to one of the caretakers, Jocelyn Halley, the building was owned by the late Magistrate Owen Fung Kee Fung. She explained that before the passing of Fung Kee Fung she and her husband were left in charge of the building as caretakers.
However, some time later, another woman, said to be Bridgette Benn purported to be the new owner of the house and land since she claimed that the building was sold to her.
“This woman never showed us any paper, document or anything to prove she owns this place or when she bought it, but she use the court and get through because we could not challenge it since the Fung Kee Fung family has the transport and other documents and are not living in the country,” Ms Halley said.
At the scene yesterday men proceeded to remove the roof from the house and all other items inside the house. These were then packed on the roadway and inside of the yard.
Persons renting sections of the building also complained of severe damage to their furniture and electrical appliances.
The building is set to be demolished today since according to residents, persons on the scene claimed they were given the go-ahead by the court to demolish the building.
“These people damage up a set of things in the house and they will have to pay for them,” Ms Halley said.
Ms Halley further said that upon checking with the Mayor and City Council there was no record of the building being sold to anyone since it is registered as family property.
Adding that advantage is being taken, Ms Halley is calling on the relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances that the new owner is claiming to own the property, since some persons are grabbing properties that the original owners might not be in a position to represent mainly because they are not in the country.
This publication tried to contact the purported new owner of the house but failed.
