National under-15 Captain Brian Sattaur goes after pacer John Paton during his unbeaten 156 for East Coast against East Bank at Providence yesterday.
As three teams turn up at Providence for one match
By Sean Devers
Recently appointed Guyana under-15 Captain Brian Sattaur led from the front with a commanding unbeaten 156 to spur East Coast to their first victory in their final game in the Demerara Inter-Association 50-over cricket competition at the Providence Stadium yesterday.
Asked to bat on a slow track after the match began 30 because three teams turned up to play, East Coast reached 275-3 off their allotted 48 overs with Kamesh Yadram, who made 54 not out, featuring in an unfinished 121-run fourth wicket stand with the left-handed Sattaur.
East Bank were bowled out for 100 off 43.1 overs despite an undefeated 35 from former National under-15 player Jagdesh Bishun.
Leg-spinners Kamesh Yadram (3-13) and Poorendra Jaigobin (2-16) and off-spinner Sookdeo (2-13) were the most successful bowlers for East Coast who have now completed their quota of three matches.
Due to the unresolved Court case involving the two factions of the Demerara Cricket Board, this competition, which is also being used to select the Demerara team for the Inter-County under-19 tournament, is being run by the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) with the GCB national youth selectors picking the Demerara side.
Yesterday, in glorious sunshine, the controversial late start was caused by the changing of the original fixtures by Chairman of the GCB Competitions Committee Carl Moore, resulting in East Coast, East and West Demerara turning up at Providence for a game which the Media was informed should have been between Georgetown and West Demerara.
After much debate and with just one scorer present, the game between East Coast and East Bank (teams which were not scheduled to participate yesterday) commenced even as the Georgetown team turned up at the Police ground in the City.
If there is rain today in the Georgetown, East Bank match at Providence, the city side and West Demerara, both with a win from their opening games, could be at a disadvantage since they should have played at the Stadium yesterday.
It is understood that West Demerara is seeking a walk over from yesterday’s planned contest since a West Demerara official claimed his side were not officially informed in writing about the venue change for their game against Georgetown yesterday.
Moore, who switched the venue for the Georgetown, West Demerara game without leaving Berbice, explained that he made the switch because he wanted the selectors to see the East Bank players at Providence yesterday.
The manner of the re-fixing of the games prompted many at Providence yesterday to wonder if these are trial matches or a serious competition being played for points and a title, among the four Demerara sub Associations.
Moore told Kaieteur Sports yesterday that President of the GCA Roger Harper had agreed for his team to give up their right to play at the Stadium yesterday so that East Coast and East Bank could play there.
The West Demerara official claimed they never agreed for the switch while the Media was not informed that two matches would have been played yesterday, contrary to the press release issued by the GCB.
On the field, with the West Demerara team watching from the sidelines, John Paton made the break through for East Bank at 8-1 when he bowled Darrel Fredericks (4).
However, the 15-year-old Sattaur who has already played at the Regional under-19 level took advantage of being dropped on three off Levon Beckles, and 77 off Paton and pulverized the bowlers with an array of brutal shots.
Sattaur smashed 19 fours and a six from 139 balls in his unbeaten 156 and added 115 for the third wicket with Steve Ramdass who hit three fours in 31 before he was caught behind off Beckles at 123-2.
Arif Habib (12) then clipped Paton to short mid-wicket to set up the unbroken partnership between Sattaur and Yadram who hit two fours in his 68-ball 54 not out.
Paton took 2-64 for East Bank who quickly slipped to 19-2 when Premchan Sookdeo had Khemraj Singh (3) stumped and bowled Keshan Persaud (6).
Left-hander Denish Singh (7) and Kerwin Austin (9) carried the score to 28 before Gajanan Suknanan removed Austin and after Singh was run out at 32-4, as only Bishun got into double figures for East Bank, who plays the least cricket of the four Associations.
The competition continues today with East Bank facing Georgetown at Providence before West Demerara and East Coast clash tomorrow at Eve Leary.
