President of GUYWID Mrs. Sharada Persaud (right) hands over the gear to Young Warriors Coach Mr. Hubern Eveans in the presence of members from both organisations.
Guyanese Women in Development (GUYWID) recently made a timely donation of one pair of wicketkeeping pads and gloves to the Young Warriors Cricket Club of Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice.
In making the presentation, President of the Organisation Mrs. Sharada Persaud said they {GUYWID} were very impressed with the facilities, which they used for a fundraiser recently and they felt compelled to make a contribution back to the community.
In response, Mr. Anil Beharry, who spoke on behalf of the club, expressed thanks to GUYWID noting that he was pleased that the club’s role in the community is recognised by another charitable organisation.
However, Beharry voiced his displeasure with the fact that the members of the community are not supportive and are bent on abusing, vandalizing and destroying the facilities. He said that the club has changed the lives of many young cricketers, keeping them away from drugs and crime with some even making the game their profession.
Beharry encouraged responsible citizens of the community to support the club for it is the only one in the East Canje area that provides an opportunity for our young people.
He cited the Rose Hall Community Centre as an example, explaining that no cricket has been played there since Berbice Expo, 2010.
A call was made for other entities to assist as the club dreams of a top class facility in the future.
