Lowe, Peters, Jacobs, Joseph & Millington among local players to appear
Team Guyana will be aiming to lift the 20th edition of the Digicel Caribbean Cup New York which is currently being played in the USA and staged by Caribbean Cup Inc.
This year which marks the third year that Digicel is on board will see a number of locally based Guyanese players turning out for Team Guyana. The batch of players left Guyana yesterday for New York and they will join up with Guyana’s number one goalkeeper Ronson Williams who Kaieteur Sports understands, has now migrated.
Williams, who was also the number one man between the uprights for local champions Alpha United, had been in the pink of condition before migrating; he had just led Alpha to the CONCACAF Champions League following their third place finish in the CFU finals, Alpha beating Defence Force of Trinidad and Tobago on penalty kicks.
The lanky goalie will now be a sure asset to Team Guyana in the Caribbean Cup which has 13 other nations vying for the top prize of US$10,000, including defending champions Jamaica.
The East Zone teams are Barbados, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Haiti, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago and West Zone members are Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Honduras, St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Lucia.
The players who left Guyana yesterday are Howard Lowe, Abassi McPherson, Dwight Peters, Dwain Jacobs, Devon Millington, Clive Nobrega and Pierre Joseph. With their inclusion, Team Guyana will be a much more potent force in the competition.
The tournament kicked off on Sunday May 15 and will continue for 16 consecutive weeks (Sunday afternoons), the final is set for Sunday September 4.
