Senior National Champion Taffin Khan rebounded from an earlier defeat to youth player, Shaheed Ali to claim the top honours when the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) brought the curtains down on the DDL/TOPCO Juices Independence Anniversary chess tournament at the KEI-SHAR’S Sports Club Sunday afternoon last. Khan defeated top senior and junior players, Pierre Boucher and Anthony Drayton respectively, in the final two rounds of the seven rounds tournament, to eventually amass 6 points from seven games.
Pierre Boucher, who incidentally had suffered a surprise defeat early in the tournament to another junior player, also rebounded and clinched the second spot with 5 points. Boucher was also involved in a losing sixth round effort against Khan in a game which lasted for the better part of four hours. In the end, a tense endgame evolved with both players employing shrewd maneuvers of rooks and pawns. Khan eventually outwitted Boucher to take the honours. The senior Khan, David, scored a similar amount of points as Boucher but was relegated to third place by dint of the tie breaker system.
Anthony Drayton of the Government Technical Institute (GTI) compiled 4 1/2 points to win the junior category, while five of his counterparts accumulated four points each in the keenly contested competition. Rashad Hussain of Mae’s Schools was eventually adjudged second in the tie-breaker, while Saeed Ali of Richard Ishmael Secondary placed third.
Suhai Feng of North Georgetown Secondary copped fourth and Cecil Cox of Queens College ended at fifth place. Junior player Ryan Mc Kay also ended on four points. Davion Mars and Shane Youssuf both scored three points each while Harresvara Persaud ended in the cellar on two points.
DDL Brand Executive Alexis Langhorne was on hand to present the cash prizes and trophies to the respective winners.
Meanwhile, Pierre Boucher matched his cash winnings and donated the entire package to the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF). GCF President Shiv Nandalall accepted the gift and conveyed gratitude to Boucher on the behalf of his organization.
