Renowned pianist, Guyanese Dr. Ray Luck CCH, will conduct his annual International Piano Workshop in his homeland this year.
Usually held in the island of St. Lucia, the four-day workshops include such teaching topics as the Fundamentals of Piano, Repertores, for Intermediates, Practical Approval to Piano Practice and Preparing Students for Music Exams.
The event is set to take off at the National Cultural Centre on Sunday July 10 at 6.00 p.m and continues with sessions on piano performance (Master classes) and Pedagogy to be held at the National Library Conference Facility from Monday July 11 to Thursday July 14, 2011.
This is the seventh such workshop to be held by Dr. Luck. Previous workshops have been hosted by the St. Lucia School of Music and attended by participants from Guyana, Anguilla, Barbados, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, St Lucia, St Vincent, Tobago, the UK and the USA.
Pianists and senior music students (Grade 5 and above) will benefit from attending the workshop as participants. Application forms are available from the Dewar Music School, 221 Charlotte Street (next to the Bahai Centre, near to New Garden Street). Students of lower grades of the ABRSM Music examinations may attend as observers not participants.
The cost of participation by Guyanese is being subsidised by the Government of Guyana so they will pay a reduced price.
The International Workshop is being sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, and the event is already attracting participants from the Caribbean and beyond.
Ray Luck has distinguished himself in the field of piano for decades now in all parts of the world. He studied music with Millicent Joseph and Ruby MacGregor while attending Queen’s College. He received the LRSM and FTCL diplomas before going to study at the Royal College of Music in London, then subsequently won First Prizes in Piano and Chamber Music from Paris’s Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique, and later graduated from Indiana University at Bloomington, USA with the D. Mus degree.
After an auspicious recital debut in London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall which received headline reviews in The Daily Telegraph, he performed in recitals in several music capitals, such as New York’s Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Paris’s Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, and London’s Royal Albert Hall. Concert tours have taken him to Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Caribbean, including a unique visit to Masakanyari, the village of the Wai-Wai in Guyana’s rainforest.
After a distinguished teaching career at Randolph College in Virginia, he was appointed the Charles A. Dana professor emeritus of music in 2002. Professional teaching awards include the Master Teacher Certificate from the American Music Teachers National Association and three Fulbright Senior fellowships to the Caribbean, Greece, and Canada.
In 1992, Ray Luck was awarded the Government of Guyana’s Cacique Crown of Honour in recognition of outstanding music accomplishment.
