Melville omitted due to poor fitness levels
The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) in its quest to rotate and continuously expose its lifters to competition at the highest possible levels has secured the necessary visas for the two athletes identified to compete at the 9th Annual IPF / NAPF North American Regional Powerlifting championships set for Hyatt Regency Hotel, Miami Florida, June 5 – 9.
Dawn McCammon Barker and Karel Mars will represent Guyana at these championships which bring together the cream de la cream of North America and the Caribbean.
Barker will be continuing where she left off at the Caribbean championships when she throws down the gauntlet to fellow heavyweight giants Millaney Santiago of Puerto Rico, M. Baum of the USA and Paula Smith of the USVI.
The Linden grown and bred Barker will be attempting to smash the Commonwealth record again as well as set new Regional marks.
Karel Mars (Men Open 105kg class) will be coming up against much tougher opposition which will give him the necessary exposure and impetus to reach for greater heights.
Like Barker, Mars too had a successful sojourn at the Caribbean Championships and will be aiming to better those performances in the Cayman Islands.
Kenneth Melville, the Caribbean Junior Champion (105kg class) was originally shortlisted by the GAPF to attend but has been omitted from final selection due to insufficient fitness levels, according to the governing body.
GAPF President Peter Green reiterated his usual and often vindicated confidence that the two lifters selected – Barker and Mars – will continue the tradition set by past champions at this level – Mervyn ‘Spongy’ Moses (75kgs class); Randolph Morgan master of the 83kgs division and ‘Big’ John Edwards, the king of the 125kgs class.
Morgan and Edwards have been shortlisted for the Pan American Championships set for Argentina in August 15 – 17. Both are defending 2009 Champions while Moses was a silver medalist at the same event.
