The Corentyne leg of the Youth Basketball Guyana Series is expected to bounce off today with two matches. Seven schools and Educational Institutions, including the University Of Guyana Berbice campus and the Guysuco Training Centre, are down to participate in the competition with the teams being divided into two groups.
Group A is comprised of Lower Corentyne Secondary (LCS), JC Chandisingh Secondary (JCCS) and Corentyne Comprehensive Secondary (CCS), while Group B is made up of Central Corentyne Secondary School (CCSC), Manchester Combine schools (MCS), Guysuco Training Centre (GTC) and the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC).
In today’s game at the Port Mourant Training School, which incidentally is the venue for all of the games, LCS will take on JCCS which will be followed by CCS VS GTC.
The competition will continue on Friday with LCS versus CCS and MCS meeting UGBC. Saturday will see three matches starting with the JCCS and CCS meeting, followed by CCSC versus UGBC and the final game between GTS and MCS.
The final preliminary games will be played on Wednesday June 15 with CCSC clashing with MCS and the tertiary institution meeting in the final preliminary game which will bring together GTC and UGBC.
The top two teams in each zone will then qualify for a place in the semifinal with the winner of one Group playing the runner-up of the other group. The semifinal is set for Friday June 17 with the winners advancing to the countywide semifinals, which are set for Saturday June 18 at the same venue. The date for the Berbice final is set for Wednesday June 22 at a venue to be decided.
Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the top teams and outstanding individual players. (Samuel Whyte)
