In a game reduced to 48 overs per side to due a 30-minute late start caused by overnight rain, West Demerara defeated East Coast by 27 runs at Eve Leary yesterday in their opening match of the Demerara Inter-Association 50-over under-19 cricket competition.
Asked to bat on a slow track and heavy outfield in sunny conditions, West Demerara, led by 30 from Arvin Seepersaud and 58 extras, were bowled out for 185 in 45.4 overs.
East Coast, who lost to Georgetown at Providence in their first round game, were then dismissed for 158 in 38.4 overs as West Demerara wrapped up the match by 15:45hrs to join the City side as the front runners in the four-team competition which is being used to select the Demerara team for the Inter County under-19 series.
The left-handed Seepersaud shared partnerships of 35 for the fifth wicket with Naveed Ali (25) and 50 for the ninth with Zafar Sookwha (10) after they joined forces with West Demerara on 135-8.
Wicketkeeper Sarfraz made 19 at the top of the order, while Travis Carto was run out for 18 as none of the West Demerara batsmen were able to build on good starts although the East Coast bowlers, who lacked control, contributed 47 wides in 58 extras. Pacer Royston Simon (2-39), Premchand Sookdeo (2-35) and Gajanand Suknanan (2-20) were the best bowlers for West Demerara.
Darrel Fredericks (27) and Reyad Zaman (22) provided a solid foundation with a 54-run opening stand when East Coast began their reply before Fredericks was caught behind off Carto.
Zaman was then run out at 63-2 but Steve Ramdass (18) and Arif Habib who top scored with 36, revived the position with a 55-run third wicket stand before Sookwha trapped Habib leg before to effectively end the resistance.
Skipper Chandrika Persaud (2-16), Sookwha (2-37), Randy Yankaran (2-5) and Julio Jones (2-7) all combined to send East Coast crashing to their second defeat from as many matches. (Sean Devers)
