The Office of the Head Presidential Guard Service has come to the defence of one of its ranks who was detained by police following the discovery of a small amount of cocaine during a routine stop and search on Saturday night by members of a Community Policing Group.
In a strongly worded letter, the Service described an article carried by the Kaieteur News captioned “Presidential Guard held with cocaine”, as patently false and misleading.
The article had stated that the drug was found on the Presidential Guard and that he admitted that it was for his personal use.
However the Office of the Presidential Guard Service said that on Saturday night around 23:30 hours the guard was returning home from a wake in Annandale, East Coast Demerara when he and two men who were riding behind him were stopped by five men who claimed that they were members of the Community Policing Group.
While one of the other men rode away, the Presidential Guard complied and submitted himself to a search of his person without disclosing his identity.
“Nothing illegal was found on him,” the statement from OP said.
The Presidential Guard claimed that during this process, and while he was still in the presence of the CPG members, one of the Rural Constables who was about 15 feet away from the main group and the Presidential Guard, indicated that he had found what later appeared to be narcotics (both cocaine and marijuana).
“Amazingly enough, on the basis of this discovery by the individual member of the Community Policing group, the Presidential Guard was taken to the Vigilance Police Station where in keeping with normal police procedures, relevant documentation was done.”
The Office of the Presidential Guard Service however went on to cite what it called “the discriminative method applied in the stop and search, the circumstances of the discovery and the lack of any police presence with the members of the Community Policing Group”.
Kaieteur News understands that the Presidential Guard has been released on bail while the police seek the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
